Our Trust of Schools

Religious Education

This School Centred Initial Teacher Training PGCE programme in RE sets out to introduce trainees to a range of strategies for teaching the subject at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (including examination courses).

It aims to cover both the broad range of subject content specialists will be handling in the classroom, including religions, beliefs and traditions, alongside the research-based pedagogy that helps learners to access and enjoy using the higher-level thinking skills they need to engage in this subject.

We will also be following the current shift in thinking about the nature and purpose of RE and how this is impacting on schools.

Specialist RE teachers are in high demand as this subject becomes increasingly important in the curriculum.

South West Teacher Training’s RE PGCE aims to produce RE teachers who are:

  • Well-qualified with a wide range of subject knowledge
  • Able to communicate to young people their passion for this subject
  • Skilled in teaching children both the knowledge, interpretation and evaluation skills that make this subject so powerful for young learners
  • Passionate about the place of their subject in a curriculum that aims to develop religiously literate citizens.

This course is led by current practitioners who can best show our trainees the methodologies and pedagogies required to plan and teach exciting, dynamic lessons that will help develop a love of RE in our learners. Trainees will be encouraged to develop a creative, reflective approach to their teaching.
